We are The Energy Detectives

The energy detectives at Informed Energy Decisions assist developers, contractors, building managers and homeowners to improve energy performance of buildings. Informed Energy Decisions is a member of the US Green Building Council, the Illinois Association of Energy Raters and a partner of the EPA’s Energy Star program.

John Porterfield and Cappy Kidd joined forces in 2003 to form Informed Energy Decisions. Both are energy raters certified by RESNET, the Residential Energy Services Network.

John Porterfield brings to the firm his vast knowledge of building science, has a degree in architecture and is the author of one of the earliest publications on home energy diagnostics that treats "the whole building as a system"

Twenty-nine years experience in home energy performance and pioneered infrared scan and air leakage diagnostics for buildings in the Chicago area. Advisor on the Working Group for the Chicago Energy Code (1998-2002)

Cappy Kidd comes to Informed Energy with years of experience as a carpenter, building contractor, and more recently as a state-licensed home inspector. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and has a degree in environmental control technology. He serves on the board of the Illinois Association of Energy Raters.

Informed Energy Decisions at Wright College

Cappy & John taught the Spring '07 term Residential Energy course in Wilbur Wright Community College's as a part of The New Building Energy Technologies Occupational Certificate.

The course details energy systems and energy efficiency technologies utilized in single- and multi-family residential building types. Within the course, Cappy and John cover systems design and installation in both new construction and retrofit projects and introduces students to field auditing techniques, environmental impacts (indoor air quality, asbestos, lead, voc’s, radon, waste disposal issues, etc.), worker health & safety considerations, Energy Star® certification, building commissioning procedures, and local regulatory requirements. Informed Energy Decisions Staff

Cheryl Pomeroy has an ecclectic background, befitting the daughter of a marine scientist raised on Sapelo Island, Georgia. It begins with a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology, received after fieldwork in Highland Ecuador in the early 1980s; followed by 15 years as a union carpenter in Chicago, becoming a journeyman in 1994, and ending with a career as a licensed home inspector working for her own company in Oak Park, IL since 2004. She has been working and training part-time with John Porterfield and Cappy Kidd since 2005. She has one daughter in college.

Carlos Mercado is office manager A recent graduate of Antioch College with a degree in Mathematics. Carlos solves all of IED’s IT questions, works in the field and keeps the office running smoothly.

Jim Philips began his HVAC career as apprentice service pipe fitter technician learning the industry from the ground up.  Upon completion of apprenticeship from The Pipe Fitters Union 597, Jim started journeyman’s duties and continued for ten years until reaching top service technician position with a major contractor.
